Hengstler’s incremental absolute rotary encoders

April 2014 Motion Control & Drives

Technology and flexibility are the key characteristics of the Hengstler Icuro and Acuro ranges of incremental and absolute rotary encoders. Users can choose from a number of options based on the performance levels they require. Variations include high resolution, optical as well as magnetic encoders in diameters ranging between 30 and 80 mm. Other choices include hollow and solid shaft types, standard electrical and mechanical interfaces and encoders with stainless steel housing or for hazardous environments.

Equipped with an open BiSS sensor interface, Hengstler’s Acuro absolute rotary encoders offer innovative engineering, easy operation and optimised functional dependability. The platform-based concept allows compact construction and modular internal components, which provide customers with optimum solutions for applications involving motor feedback and automation.

There are 13 different models in the range, including the Acuro AC36 with a single-turn resolution up to 17 bits. This model has a 6 mm solid shaft and its counterpart is the hollow-shaft AD36 mode. Operating temperature is between -40 and 100°C and it has a BiSS or SSI interface with optional sinus 1 Vss interface.

The incremental rotary encoders range from cost conscious standard models through to the extremely robust heavy duty variants. A line-coded disc mounted on a rotary bearing interrupts a beam of light. The interruptions of the beam are sensed by the receptor element and electronically processed. The information is then made available as a rectangular signal at the encoder output. Hengstler rotary encoders are capable of providing measurements of up to 10 000 pulses per revolution. The number of lines determines the resolution.

The HD20 incremental encoder is offered in one or two-channel versions and boasts ATEX certification for intrinsically safe devices. It is a high-resolution encoder with a rugged code disc available in a nickel or stainless steel housing with NEMA 4X, IP67 ingress protection.

Accurate sine wave Hengstler rotary encoders are popular in drives with high dynamics, due to their low harmonic distortion. They have excellent immunity to interference and high functional dependability due to control and system monitoring and the broad working temperature allows the motor to be used to capacity.

Hengstler encoders in the wind energy sector are used for pitch and yaw control, as well as for generator speed feedback and have saltwater resistant housing materials for offshore plants.

As one of the most potentially dangerous environments, the oil and gas industry requires reliable encoders that meet stringent industry standards. Hengstler’s encoders offer advanced sensing technology and reliable solutions for the industry, with ATEX Zone 0 and Zone 1, NEC Class I Div II, CE and CSA certifications. Designed for use at temperatures of between -50 and 100°C, they are independently tested at up to 400 G shock and 20 G vibration.
