Handheld radiation isotope identifiers

April 2014 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Thermo Scientific supplies the advanced and highly intuitive RIIDEye handheld isotopic identifiers. They provide real-time gamma source identification based on Thermo Fisher Scientific’s patented quadratic compression conversion (QCC) technology. Their quick detection of radioactivity makes them a valuable tool for use in ports, airports, security checkpoints and other areas where assurance is needed.

The RIIDEye instruments are designed to be operated by non-technical safety personnel who have limited experience in radiation detection, location and measurement. A large, bright display verifies the type and intensity of the radioactive isotope. Real-time data recording allows for processing and transmission for reach back analysis. Colour-coded peaks in the display quickly alert the user to the presence of either benign or threatening radioactivity. For remote detection, the display unit can be separated from the detector and reconnected with an extender cable. This allows the detector to reach places it normally would not be able to, such as the underbody of a truck.

They are available in three configurations, the RIIDEye G for gamma identification, the RIIDEye GN for gamma identification with neutron detection and the RIIDEye G Hi-Res with a lanthanum bromide detector for high resolution readings. Utilising natural potassium, these highly advanced detectors provide continuous stabilisation for uninterrupted performance. There is no integral Cs-137 source, so there are fewer false IDs, higher Cs-137 detection sensitivity and shielded Am-241 sensitivity. They can detect temperature drift and adjust calibration automatically, ensuring accurate results within virtually any environment.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
