Bus surveillance with Korenix wireless solution

September 2013 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Numerous bus companies around the world serve thousands of travellers every day. For reasons of security and management, modern transport requires intelligent transportation surveillance systems, which are able to capture and transmit high-definition video footage – especially useful when an emergency occurs on board a vehicle. Transportation solutions are mostly installed in vehicles exposed to a variety of climatic conditions, so they must be capable of operating in extended temperatures and surviving extremes of shock, vibration and humidity.

With mega pixel IP cameras installed throughout the bus, the enhanced recording of the event is tagged and stored to a video recorder. The recorder then collects and uplinks the video images through its Gigabit ports via a wireless connection when the vehicle is in range of the depot. Intelligent transportation systems enable users to stay informed and make safer and smarter use of transport networks. They also allow transport providers to track and manage their critical assets.

System requirements

* Gigabit ports, non-blocking switching performance will be required to provide high resolution video streaming from megapixel IP cameras.

* Fast wireless transmission is demanded from the bus to the depot.

* No data transmission loss under conditions of sustained vibration.

* Easy installation of 24 VDC power input from the bus.

The Korenix solution

For high-speed mobile applications, the JetWave 2800 series provide high speed wireless links suitable for installation onboard the bus. When the bus is in range, it will connect via the gigabit backbone and ensure that high quality megapixel video images are transferred to the depot. Its 802.11n MIMO technology guarantees high performance and can reach transfer speeds of up to 300 Mbps. JetWave 2800 has PoE compliant power inputs for easy installation of 24 VDC power from the bus. The enclosure, IP67 rated, and the wide operating range of -35 to 70°C, allows users to install the devices in harsh climate operating conditions.

The JetNet 3906G-w industrial full Gigabit PoE+ switch is designed to cope with the data rates required by modern megapixel IP cameras. It offers 4 high-power PoE ports, 30 W per port, for 120 W in total. The unit is compact for installation in tight spaces, offers an operating temperature range of -40 to 75°C and can operate from a 12-36 VDC power supply.
