Endress+Hauser appoints new manager for local temperature production centre

July 2011 News

Endress+Hauser’s local production facility for temperature recently appointed Chris Gimson as its new general manager. Chris has been with the company for 28 years, 24 of them as technical director of the production facility in Manchester, two years as a senior project manager at the production centre for flow in Switzerland and the last two years as energy management consultant at the sales centre in South Africa. His career has given the new general manager of the E+H Pyrotemp temperature sensor manufacturing facility in Benoni first-rate experience in all aspects of the design, manufacture and logistical operations behind the production and marketing of quality process instrumentation.

The E+H temperature production centre in Germany responded to the South African request for a local manufacturing presence by purchasing the Pyrotemp company in 2008, thereby starting its journey of transformation from a small, successful but resource-limited company, to a world class manufacturing facility on par with the existing network of E+H temperature manufacturing facilities around the world. 2009 saw the transfer of the now named E+H Pyrotemp from its old premises in Boksburg to a state-of-the-art site in Apex, Benoni.

To succeed in the competitive temperature sensor industry, a critical element is a workforce that is both multiskilled and flexible. To meet this requirement, additional personnel were recruited and the full complement of employees is now involved in an ongoing training program, both locally and at facilities in Germany and Italy.

Although still a ‘work in progress’, the introduction of modern work practices and systems is allowing the company to provide an ever increasing temperature product range to meet both standard and specially engineered customer requirements ranging from simple utility measurements such as steam and compressed air, to the high temperature needs of the glass and metal industries.

Gimson will now oversee the next step of the company’s evolution, the introduction of new manufacturing processes and practices and integration with the E+H global sales and production facilities. Transferring from Switzerland to Johannesburg in April, Gimson is proud to be able to launch his time in E+H Pyrotemp with the achievement in May of ISO9001 by the Swiss accreditation organisation SQS. After the installation of a high-speed fibre-optic link later this year, the organisation’s worldwide SAP administration platform will connect Pyrotemp and the E+H network to streamline ordering and administration processes. In parallel, new equipment and the transfer of some of the European-based products will provide South Africa with a locally produced version of most popular models, assuring quality and shortening delivery times through the E+H Sales Centre in Sandton.
