Electrostatic air cleaners for a pollution-free environment

November 2000 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Electrostatic air cleaners have the unique ability to purify the air and remove harmful particulates, ranging from those visible to the naked eye, such as pollen and hair (10 µm) to invisible smoke, tobacco fumes, bacteria, dust, oil mist, milled flour, resin fumes, certain welding fumes, soldering fumes and viruses (1 to 0,01 µm). They are 98,5% effective in removing these irritating particles which create an unhealthy atmosphere for workers and cause damage to expensive sophisticated industrial equipment and computers.

Universal IPE has recently started introducing Euromate air cleaners to industry. Apart from utilising them in staff rooms, reception areas, boardrooms and offices, these units are increasingly installed in control rooms for PLCs, DCSs, electrical substations and in air-conditioning ducts of central air-conditioning systems.

The actual removal of particles is important to note. Pollutants are attracted and retained by use of a system of filters. Only once the filter cell is removed and cleaned are the pollutants washed away.

In the first of three stages of filtration air is drawn through a pre-filter. Coarser particles such as dust and pollen are removed from the atmosphere. Next, the electrostatic filter, the 'heart' of the system, removes smaller particles and micro-organisms, down to 0,01 µm. This filter is similarly responsible for eliminating bacteria and certain viruses. A series of grounded plates, electrically charged, attract particles which receive an electrical charge as they pass through the ionising section. By the time the air reaches the third stage it is almost completely purified. All that remains is for odours and gases to be removed and neutralised by an activated carbon filter.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
