The AS interface (AS-i) power extender, in combination with masters of protection class IP 65/67, permit decentralised AS-i networks to be set up at maximum distance. Use of AS-i power supply units of a high protection class are not required. By means of this new power distribution concept, a useful range of up to 100 m is possible even in networks where the control panel and AS-i power supply are situated remotely from the field equipment. This distribution unit is directly installed in the field in the immediate vicinity of the master or gateway, of protection class IP 65. In traditional designs, for reasons of cost, the power supply unit was installed in terminal boxes. This often reduced the length of the practically usable AS-i network by the distance between the terminal box and the AS-i master.
The AS-i power extender receives 30 V d.c. from a central power supply. Through an isolating network the device provides the AS-i voltage at its output side. In the event of a low voltage level at the input side of the power extender, an AS-i network of limited extension can still be operated. Integral LEDs give information on the level of the voltage and this in turn makes it possible to determine the maximum possible distance which can be effectively connected.
