SAIMC: From the President’s desk

July 2019 SAIMC

On behalf of the SAIMC, I am proud to announce that there are multiple initiatives that have progressed well within our organisation:

Automation as an engineering discipline in South Africa

As most of you already know, we are driving the recognition of automation as a separate engineering discipline, together with the Automation Federation, in order to get our youth equipped to make use of the technologies and designs of the fourth industrial revolution. This is an exciting initiative and I want to thank each individual who has worked to ensure that it is realised.

The SAIMC is a Voluntary Association of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), and this will be done in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders to ensure success. A steering committee to discuss this has been established that will give us regular feedback on the progress to ensure that members get maximum benefit from this initiative

Changing the education model for automation in South Africa

The NTIP initiative is not only focused on the youth, but will also provide current working employees with opportunities within education.

The main thrust in this initiative is to develop education that is modular, and which adapts to changes in technology such that the skills which are taught are those required by employers. The training will also be internationally accredited to ensure participants have optimal employment opportunities.

Development of the youth of South Africa

In 2019, the SAIMC has spent 21% of its membership fees on youth development. We are a proud sponsor of the FIRST initiative and also collaborate with initiatives to educate children about career opportunities within automation. The various branches within our organisation proactively go to schools and tertiary institutions to give students an opportunity to discuss career options with professionals working in the industry.

If you are not aware of our initiatives, please visit our website or contact us. If you want to get involved, we urge you to get in touch and become a part of this journey.

Yours in automation,

Annemarie van Coller.
