Endress+Hauser celebrates two million magmeter milestone

Process automation specialist, Endress+Hauser, recently announced the installation of two million electromagnetic flowmeters (magmeters) since production began in 1977.

“We are extremely proud of this achievement, especially in a rapidly changing technological world where, historically, many products or brands have simply disappeared as innovation and needs change,” says Frans van den Berg, product manager flow, Endress+Hauser South Africa. “The fact that we have seen year-on-year growth in our magmeters is extremely encouraging and we would in particular like to thank our customers for their loyalty.”

This measuring principle of magmeters has been in use for almost 80 years and its popularity continues unabated in many different fields. Locally, Endress+Hauser magmeters have been installed in some of the main industries, including water and wastewater, food and beverage, chemical, and mining.

“Today electromagnetic magmeters are most frequently used in water management, the primaries industry, the chemical sector and the food and beverage industry,” says van den Berg. “Modern magmeters are so robust that they can be used in mining and tunnelling applications – in installation conditions that are among the harshest anywhere. Typical usage includes measuring and monitoring continuous flows, filling and dosing, as well as metering in custody transfer applications.”

Most water-based fluids can be metered: potable water, wastewater, slurry, pulps, pastes, acids, alkalis, juices, fruit mashes, and so on. However, electrically non-conductive liquids, gas and steam, cannot be measured.

Van den Berg points out that the major advantage of this measuring principle is that it is unaffected by pressure, temperature and viscosity. In addition, the flow profile has a minimal effect on the measurement results. “These are properties that make magmeters extremely attractive for a very wide range of industrial metering applications,” he explains. “Ongoing research and development in the fields of sensor design and signal processing have led to a product with a tried and tested service history that can be integrated smoothly into highly complex applications for high-end measurement, instrumentation and control.”

From humble beginnings

Endress+Hauser fist produced its magmeters with just three employees working in a former military barracks. “Today,” says Bernd-Josef Schäfer, managing director of Endress+Hauser Flowtec, “our production spans six sites around the globe – in Switzerland, France, the USA, China, India, and Brazil – and boasts state-of-the-art logistics. This infrastructure is what has enabled us to produce two million electromagnetic flowmeters to date, in accordance with all required quality standards.”

The company’s inventive talent has enabled Endress+Hauser to keep offering its customers clever innovations such as the precision measurement of difficult fluids (Autozero, 1981), microprocessor control (Variomag, 1984), two-wire technology (Eximag, 1987), or the operating matrix (Tecmag, 1990).

In 1993, all of these device variants were brought together to form a single product family under the name of ‘Proline’. Since then, the Proline device family has been subject to constant development to ensure that it meets the prevailing requirements in a wide range of industries. Alongside this family, however, Endress+Hauser also produces flowmeters for very particular applications – for example, filling bottles at one-second intervals.

“Innovations such as these enable us to align our product portfolio consistently with the needs of every industry.
