Narrow switches for large distances

August 2016 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

Phoenix Contact’s particularly narrow, smart managed narrow switches, are now available with fibre ports for covering medium and large distances.

Thanks to two integrated FO ports (multimode or single mode), the switches for use in Profinet or EtherNet/IP applications cover distances of up to 15 kilometres. They therefore enable the connection of widely distributed network parts. Thanks to the integrated Profinet device, the switches are ideal for use in control environments in Profinet applications. This enables the user to configure and diagnose the switch via the controller. Furthermore, easy device replacement is also possible thanks to automatic detection of the neighbourhood relationships and transfer of the configuration settings. When switching to EtherNet/IP mode, the switch automatically activates the relevant multicast functions for EtherNet/IP. This minimises multicast traffic in the network.

Case History 190: Measurement problem ruins level control.
Michael Brown Control Engineering Editor's Choice Fieldbus & Industrial Networking
The widely held belief in many plants that tuning will solve all base layer control problems is completely fallacious. Bad tuning is generally not the main reason for loops to perform badly. It is important when performing optimisation that all elements in a loop are considered, in addition to the control strategy, before even thinking of tuning.
