SAIMC: Johannesburg branch

August 2021 News

The branch recently had the privilege of hosting Turck Banner for another hybrid technology evening, which was a great success. The topic was, ‘Have you seen the light?’

Kenneth McPherson, who was his usual charismatic self, kept both sets of attendees entertained right the way through his presentation, which gave an overview of lighting technology.

Kenneth started with a brief history of Turck Banner before moving on to the technology session, which took us through ‘seeing the light’ where he discussed the reason for needing lighting and the response that was generated by each of those needs, and how colour can affect the task at hand – cooler temperatures are ideal for tasks, while warmer lighting adds to skin and clothing tones. He also clarified the difference between lux and lumens and explained how lux is what matters to the eye because of the intensity of the light that hits the surface, while lumens indicate the amount of visible light being emitted. Lighting helps with situational awareness, giving machines the ability to talk via colour, animation, and the ability to communicate with the ‘correct’ people, for instance, tower lights for supervisors, illumination for maintenance personnel, and local indication for operators. Lighting also has the ability to communicate back to the machine via touch buttons or even solid-state LEDs with capacitive touch integrated.

The branch thanks Kenneth for the interesting and informative presentation.

The Johannesburg team had to postpone the planned ‘Ladies Celebration’ due to the latest Covid restrictions. We will keep everyone informed as and when the situation normalises again.
