SAIMC: Durban branch

April 2021 SAIMC

Members and visitors were treated to a Zoom presentation that had the understated title: Introduction to ultrasonic flow measurement, by Marco Lopes of NIC KZN. Marco was ably backed up by Howard Lister, also of NIC KZN and by the knowledgeable Klaas Cronje of OIH Controls.

The title might have made people expect that it would just be a simple coverage of principles of how various types of ultrasonic flowmeters worked, but it proved to be considerably more than that. Certainly, the basics were well covered, but that lead on to some case studies and an interactive discussion about some practical applications where problems were experienced, for example, on gases at low pressure and with unpredictable molecular weights, such as in flare gas monitors. The influence of flow profile was also discussed, as that is a factor that influences many types of flowmeter. Possible alternatives to deal with these problems were debated and much food for thought was generated.

Questions that arose were dealt with competently and to the satisfaction of those who attended, with further investigative work for some participants having been prompted.

The presenters were thanked for a very interesting evening and the meeting was ended so that everyone could enjoy their evening meals, unfortunately without the chance to network over the supper and drinks as used to be the case a year ago.

All branch technology evenings will continue to be held using electronic media, until such time as the pandemic has been brought under sufficient control to allow us to hold face-to-face meetings safely and legally. We are resurrecting a system that will let us record live presentations for the benefit of members who live too far away or have other reasons that they are unable to attend in person, but need the benefit of the CPD points.
